Upcoming Horror Films Releasing in 2016

While 2015 sadly wasn’t a great year for horror movies, 2016 looks set to make up for this year’s let-downs with many upcoming releases that could easily make it onto the list of the best, and hopefully scariest, horror movies of 2016. Sequels and remakes are expected of course and currently the most notable are The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist and Amityville: The Awakening.
The current biggest contender for 2016’s scariest film is The Forest and the most intriguing on the list is Pride and Prejudice and Zombies – if the title alone doesn’t sell it to you then who knows what will. In accordance with tradition, the majority of the films are released in the early months of 2016 following the Oscar season.

The Forest – Release Date: January 8th 2016
the best horror movies 2016
The film takes place in a Japanese forest named the Aokigahara, a real-life place which has become an infamous suicide spot. It is in this location that a young American woman, Sara, goes searching for her twin sister who mysteriously went missing never to return again. Despite being warned many times to not stray from the marked path, Sara decides that she must enter the depths of the forest in order to discover the truth about what really happened to her sister. Unfortunately, the forest is full of haunted souls who seek to prey upon anyone who crosses their path.

Antibirth – Release Date: January 25th 2016
Antibirth Movie 2016
Wild party girl Lou (Natasha Lyonne) is in a pickle. After a party that perhaps got a little too wild, bizarre symptoms and uncouth pains begin plaguing her, much to the dismay of friends like Sadie (Chloe Sevigny), who think she’s just attempting to conceal a pregnancy. Yet, as kidnappings and random acts of suspicion begin piling up all over town, a mysterious stranger (Meg Tilly) appears with potential answers to Lou’s dire condition. It’s body horror basics, wrapped in a tight sheen of B-actresses and a plot intriguing enough to stick – as such, Antibirth is definitely a movie meant for horror purists.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies – Release Date: February 5th 2016
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies Movie
Based on Seth Grahame-Smith’s immensely popular parody novel, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies reworks a classic Jane Austen story to give the period drama a horror upgrade. It appears that soon-to-be-lovers Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy have more than just the issue of social class on their plate after a zombie outbreak puts the inhabitants of 19th Century England in extreme peril while the undead aimlessly walk the land. The movie features a host of British acting talent including Lily James as Elizabeth, Lena Headey as Lady Catherine de Bourgh, and Sam Riley as Mr. Darcy.

Friend Request – Release Date: April 20th 2016 (UK)
Friend Request Movie
Laura (Alycia Debnam-Carey) is one of the most popular girls in college. She spends the days surfing social media and being adored by most everyone that crosses her path – until today. A friend request from a random chick sparks her interest into acceptance, but things quickly spiral out of control when Laura becomes obsessed with finding out the user’s identity. As the deaths of those closest to her escalate in number, the former college queen must discover who the culprit is before it’s simply too late. Such a concept has recently been done with Unfriended (2014), but that’s not to take away from the style that director Simon Verhoeven could potentially bring to the table.

The Neon Demon – Release Date: TBA June 2016
The Neon Demon Movie
Detailing a rocky descent into the L.A. underground, Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon lives up to it’s colorful title. The uber-violent auteur, most known for controversial outings like Bronson (2008), Drive (2011), and Only God Forgives (2013), loves him a lavish display of brutality and beauty in equal amounts. And this story, about an aspiring model whose youth is quickly drained by a group of money hungry women, falls right in line with impressive visual storytelling and distant acting. It won’t do much to expand beyond Refn’s core audience, but, to be fair, it doesn’t seem as though he really cares.

31 – Release Date: September 16th 2016
31 Movie
Rob Zombie doesn’t do mainstream stuff. He’s the kind of filmmaker designed in a lab to define phrases like “torture porn” and splatter cinema to a select few. And, unsurprisingly, this trend continues with 31, the latest gore-fest that’ll have popcorn looking mighty unpleasant to snack on. The pitch behind the film is simple enough: a group of carnival workers are kidnapped and forced to wander a maze-like building where many seek to murder and torture them. Boom. Zombie regulars like Malcolm McDowell and the first lady herself, Sheri Moon, add the final dash of flavor upon this rancid helping of horror. Don’t approach if you can’t stomach extreme gore, seriously.
