Chick Flicks 2017

The Top 10 Chick Flicks List in 2017 – (So Far)

Chick flicks are always a dicy genre to define. Whether it has a female protagonist or dabbles in the romantic comedy schtick that’s so popular in mainstream cinema, certain films like the biopic Hidden Figures make a strong case for usurping it’s box with a bigger, perhaps even more acclaimed reputation. Elsewhere, projects like Girl Trip and Before I Fall land far more comfortably in the pocket of chick flicks, while fare Fifty Shades Darker will go on to rule the box office like it’s predecessor in the coming year. As the middle chapter in the Fifty Shades of Grey series, Christian (Jamie Dornan) and Anastasia (Dakota Johnson) develop their relationship into more daring, potentially even dangerous territory. Toss in a slicker script from Niall Leonard and new director James Foley (After Dark My Sweet, Glengarry Glen Ross), and the film will do much of the so-called “chick flick” dominating in 2017.

HIDDEN FIGURES

The story of Katherine Johnson is so impressive it would be more believable as fiction that a single, historical life. Johnson, an African American woman forced to contend with Civil Rights and discrimination, was a physicist, space scientist, and mathematician who calculated the trajectories for Project Mercury and the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. Massive shoes to fill no doubt, but Academy Award nominee Taraji P. Henson certainly seems up to the task. Henson will lead the charge as Johnson in Hidden Figures, the biographical drama directed by Theodore Melfi. The fledgling filmmaker made his debut with 2014’s St. Vincent, and it looks as though he’ll bring the same light touch and character driven work that made the Bill Murray vehicle a delight.

TABLE 19
best chick flicks in 2017
Eloise McGarry (Anna Kendrick) gets thrown for a loop when she arrives at a wedding and is seated at Table 19. As the evening progresses, she realizes that the table was intended for guests who were reluctantly invited or were hoped to not attend at all. It’s a premise that’s certainly on the bonkers side of things, but screenwriters Mark and Jay Duplass have pretty much made a career on intimate lunacy. Previous films Cyrus (2010) and Jeff, Who Lives At Home (2011) thrive on this awkward social comedy, which will find a directorial edge in the presence of Jeffrey Blitz. The film may not break box office records, but with Kendrick leading a posse of performers like Craig Robinson, Lisa Kudrow, and Tony Revolori, it’s safe to say anything can happen.

SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME

Another 2016 spillover, Same Kind of Different As Me was originally slated for release on April 29th. It is unclear as to what caused such a lengthy delay, but a trailer review from The Guardian wasn’t exactly encouraging when calling it “the worst, most offensive thing I have ever seen.” As to whether it truly is to that degree of awfulness remains to be seen, but a talented quartet of Greg Kinnear, Djimon Hounsou, Renée Zellweger, and Jon Voight look to draw a healthy crowd with a February release. The plot, adapted from a non-fiction novel by Ron Hall and Denver Moore, deals with the tragedy of cancer and the unexpected friendship that resulted for both men.

BEFORE I FALL
2017 chick flicks
Echoing the plot to 2014’s similarly titled If I Stay, Before I Fall documents the last day of Samantha Kingston (Zoey Deutch)– over and over again. The teenage girl is trapped in a Groundhog Day loop where she must relive the events of her death until she can figure out a way to stop it. Adapted from the novel of the same name by Lauren Oliver, Before I Fall has plenty of rom-com potential with a proven hook and an audience that contributed to the book’s critical acclaim. As for Deutch, a rising star on the strength of films like Everybody Wants Some!! and Vincent-N-Roxy, she will finally be given center stage and a chance to knock it out of the park. A potential sleeper heading into next year.

MOTHER/DAUGHTER
upcoming romantic movies releasing in 2017
Inspired by the real life experience of writer Kate Dippold, Mother/Daughter has a hilarious one-two punch in the form of Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn. As the titular family members, both comediennes are caught in a whirlwind when their planned vacation goes wildly out of control. Schumer, a sudden star on the back of her stand-up specials and 2015’s Trainwreck, will also co-write with Dippold, while the iconic Goldie Hawn will lead a supporting cast of Christopher Meloni, Ike Barinholtz, Oscar Jaenada and Wanda Sykes. It’s a story that’s been done repeatedly as of late, from the Seth Rogen-Barbra Streisand vehicle The Guilt Trip (2012) to the Rose Byrne-Susan Sarandon farce The Meddler (2016), but there’s still hope this comedy could rise above the pack.

GIRL TRIP

Another romantic comedy, and another star-studded cast to rake in the audience. Girl Trip, the latest offering from director Malcolm D. Lee (Soul Men, The Best Man), joins four lifelong friends who travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Music Festival. While there, the bonds and past excitement of their younger years begin to come out– the shenanigans that result are, of course, part of the fun. Let experienced workers answer how much does a typical maid service cost in Texas and get the best home cleaning ever. Lee has made a career on this type of feel-good fodder, and the assembles talent of Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Tiffany Haddish ensure the winning streak continues. To further add fuel to the comedic fire, newly minted Marvel star Mike Colter will also pop up to lend his dashing good luck. Old fashioned, formulaic fun.

FIFTY SHADES DARKER

Despite winning fix of its six Golden Raspberry nominations (including Worst Picture and Worst Actress), 2015’s Fifty Shades of Grey was a cataclysmic hit. The erotic romance, adapted from the best-selling E.L. James novel, dove into the world of sadomasochism with stringent pop culture flair. From there, it was only a matter of time before the sequel, Fifty Shades Darker, was unleashed in theaters. Picking up after the events of the first film, Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) tries to move on from her relationship with Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), but is talked into giving it another chance. As the couple begin to finally connect, however, Christian’s dark past begins to tear them apart. The trilogy’s final film, Fifty Shades Freed, is slated for release in 2018.
